IS STRESS GETTING THE BEST OF YOU?

stress

You may experience both good and bad stress. Good stress, for example, preparing for a vacation, can give you more energy. Bad stress, such as having to pay too many bills, can take a toll on your health.

What can you do to cope with stress to prevent its bad effects?

  •

    **  Deep Breathing: Relax your shoulders and take a deep breath, blow out slowly. Repeat several times a day.

    **  Manage your time: Create a written schedule that will keep you from feeling overwhelmed.

    ** Exercise daily: When you exercise, even for only 5-10 minutes, your body releases hormones that help decrease the effects of stress.

    ** Stop worrying about things you  cannot control: Worry tends to make stress worse. Instead control your reactions, and say positive things to   yourself in place of negative. For example, “It’s their problem, not mine.” Or if you can’t change the situation, leave the situation, such as take a restroom break if you are at work.

      •  If you try the above suggestions and continue to feel “stressed”, avoid talking with your friends or co-workers. They may try to be helpful but may just ‘feed your stress’ and make it worse. Make an appointment with your company’s EAP counselor (which would be completely confidential) or with   other similar professionals.

Research Shows: Bad Stress Can;

** Lead to health problems such as high blood pressure and heart problems.

** Cause sleeping problems, stomach pains, headaches, mood swings and trouble concentrating.

Changing the way you cope with stress is not easy; it takes effort and rehearsal,

but you can learn to decrease your stress with practice.
