If you take very simple precautions, most skin cancers are preventable, even the deadly melanoma! Although dark skin does not burn in the sun as easily as fair skin, everyone is at risk for skin cancer. What choices do you have?

  • *Avoid and protect against UV radiation, both UVA and UVB. UV is the name for the invisible rays that comes from the sun, sunlamps, and tanning beds.
  • * Avoid deliberate tanning. Lying in the sun or using a tanning bed may feel good, but the end result is a 1 in 5 chance that you will develop skin cancer.
        • *Avoid Sunburns. Sunburns significantly increase your lifetime risk of developing skin cancer.
  • *Avoid sunrays between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. when the UV is the highest.
  • Wear a hatthat protects your scalp, ears, face, and back of neck.
  • * Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB.

Research Shows:

**Skin Cancer is the most common cancer in the United States
**If your skin cells are damaged by sun or tanning beds, your cells may begin to rapidly multiply out of control & form a tumor.
**Sunscreen should have a Skin Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30. SPF means how much of the rays are blocked, not how long you can stay in the sun.
** You should apply sunscreen to all exposed skin 30 minutes before going into the sun, every 2 hours, and after swimming or sweating.
