Avoid the Flu!

What are you doing to avoid getting the Flu this fall and winter?

Unless informed by a medical provider that you should not do so, get a flu (influenza) shot (vaccine).

+ Because the vaccine protects you for the most likely (but not all) viruses that cause the flu;

+ Because, it takes about two weeks after vaccination for you to be protected against flu virus infection;

+ And, because people with flu can spread it to others up to about 6 feet away, especially when they cough and sneeze,

It's extremely important that you do the following:

 #1.  Wash your hands often and thoroughly with soap and water.

+ Rub your hands vigorouslyfor at least 20 seconds. Scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails.

    + Use your towel to turn off the faucet—the faucet handles are dirty with germs and viruses!  After washing your hands, don’t touch the faucet handle!

    + When you cannot wash your hands, use an alcohol-based sanitizer.

    + Sneeze and cough into your elbow, not your hands!

    + Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.  Viruses will spread from your hands to your body.

     #2.  Don’t pass along your flu to others.

     You can infect other people beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick. You and others may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick.

     Stay home from work if you have the flu! Don’t share your virus with your co-workers!

    www.cdc.gov or www.mayoclinic.com are two of many excellent websites to learn more about avoiding the flu.
